Exercise and education to help you live better with hip or knee osteoarthritis
If you have osteoarthritis (OA), our team can provide you with an assessment and treatment plan with you based on current evidence. This may include treatment with different members of the team such as our dietitian, physiotherapist or exercise physiologist.
Group therapy can also be used to assist with the management of osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. Group therapy may be water and/or land-based classes. The GLA:D® (Good Living with Arthritis: Denmark) program, is a proven education and exercise program specifically designed for hip and knee osteoarthritis.
The GLA:D® program can help to:
- reduce pain and stiffness in your knees or hips
- understand how osteoarthritis affects your body
- improve your sense of control over your condition
- slow progression of osteoarthritis symptoms
- meet people who share similar experiences.
• Two group education sessions which teach you about Osteo Arthritis, its risk factors, treatment options and self-management strategies
• Group exercise sessions, twice a week for 6 weeks, to improve your control of the joint, your confidence in the joint and your strength
• A review at 3 months with your clinician to discuss your progress and goals and re-measure your functional ability
• Completion of a questionnaire on registration with the program, and then again at 3 and 12 months after registration to measure changes in areas such as pain, function, quality of life, and medication use.
