Counselling for carers

It’s OK to take time to talk to someone.

Looking for a safe, supportive space to share your thoughts and feelings? Carer Gateway can help. You can meet with a counsellor in person or chat with them over the phone.

How can counselling help me?

Caring for a loved one is an important task but it can be stressful at times. Everyone deals with the caring role in different ways.

If you feel stressed, sad or frustrated, it may help to speak with a counsellor.

Counselling provides a safe, non-judgmental space to focus on your feelings, thoughts and mental wellbeing. A trained counsellor will work with you to understand your concerns, help you explore them, and take practical steps forward.

How can I access carer counselling?

  • Phone counselling: You can choose the convenience of getting counselling over the phone. This can be a great option if travel is difficult or you have limited alternative care options.
  • In-person individual counselling: You can meet with a counsellor face-to-face if you prefer. Carers can access up to six in-person, one-on-one counselling sessions through Carer Gateway. These sessions are tailored to your needs and delivered over a timeframe that suits you.
  • In-person group counselling: Our Carer Gateway service providers also offer group counselling sessions where you can share your experiences and emotions in a safe environment, guided by a professional counsellor. Trained staff at Carer Gateway can help you work out whether group counselling is right for you.
