January 26 – Change the Date

Holstep Health supports the call for a new National Day of Celebration that is respectful and inclusive for everyone.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have cared for Country for more than 60,000 years, maintaining strong cultures, traditions, and community connections. For many, January 26 is a day of mourning. It marks the start of colonisation, loss of land, and changes to culture and community wellbeing that are still felt today.

As a community health organisation, we understand that health is shaped by history, culture, and lived experience. We are committed to closing the health gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and non-Indigenous people through culturally safe services and programs that strengthen and celebrate culture.

Our staff have the option to work on the January 26 public holiday each year and take a day off at another time.

Our new Reconciliation Action Plan (to be released later in 2026) will set out clear steps, accountability, and ways we will continue this work.

Together, we can move towards a future where a National Day of Celebration is meaningful and respectful for all. Find out more about our First Nations health and support.
