At 73, Maria might have expected to be slowing down and enjoying a quieter life in Eltham. Instead, for the past six years she and her late husband have been raising their 12-year-old great-granddaughter, who could not live safely with her parents. With love and stability, Maria has helped her thrive – overcoming early challenges and now flourishing socially and excelling at school.
When Maria’s husband became unwell and entered palliative care at the Austin Hospital, she was referred to our service. After his passing, Maria wanted to make sure her great-granddaughter’s care was secure for the long term. Over several months and multiple court hearings, our lawyer supported Maria to apply for and obtain a parenting order. This gave her sole parental responsibility – ensuring her great-granddaughter’s safety, stability, and continued ability to spend time with her parents when it suited her needs. The order also meant Maria could access additional income support available to permanent carers.
