We’re thrilled to unveil our new RAP artwork, Mulana Yinya Duning – Spirit Light Within, created by local Yorta Yorta/Taungurung artist Kahli Luttrell.
This artwork celebrates culture, connection and the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Watch our launch video to hear Kahli share the inspiration behind the artwork and the stories, connections and meaning woven throughout this special piece.
As we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly this NAIDOC Week, we are proud to share an artwork that reflects our commitment to reconciliation, cultural respect and meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
For Kahli, the artwork began with community. It reflects people’s experiences, voices and stories, including the strength of Elders and families.
“I wanted this artwork to represent community and people’s experiences, people’s voices, strong Elder voices in our community, the strength from families and support within services,” Kahli shared.
Expressed in the Yorta Yorta language, Mulana Yinya Duning translates to “Spirit Light Within”. The artwork reflects the inner strength that exists within every person and the connections that shape our identity, including family, community, Country and culture.
Every element of the artwork tells a story
- The tree represents growth and opportunity.
- The small squares represent home, wherever home may be, and the places, people and connections that shape us.
- The figures honour Elders, families and community voices, recognising the importance of listening, lived experience and working together to create positive change.
For Kahli, this artwork is deeply personal, connecting to her family’s history and the strong Aboriginal health legacy in our local community.
“My grandmother was one of the first Aboriginal nurses down here and worked for the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, but she lived around this area only around the corner, so it’s very significant to me and close to my heart in creating this piece of artwork.”
Our CEO, Tassia Michaleas thanked Kahli for creating a meaningful artwork for our organisation.
“We are so proud and privileged to have this that will be sitting alongside our RAP plan, across our organisation and signifying our commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Kahli, thank you so much, it’s absolutely beautiful.”
Mulana Yinya Duning – Spirit Light Within is more than an artwork. It is a visual expression of culture, connection and community, and a reminder of the role we all play in continuing the journey of reconciliation.
